Jazz is considered one of the only truly unique American art forms, and the preservation and advancement of this important National treasure is alive and well at Bixby High.  Selected through audition, and under the direction of Mr. Matt Hartung, the 20 or so members of the Bixby High School Jazz Band are exposed to a variety of Jazz idioms and challenged to explore the unique combination of group performance and individual expression called for in Jazz music. Through participation in the Jazz Band, students gain a richer understanding of music theory and composition, and a greater appreciation of America’s special musical heritage. In addition to performing at several school concerts, the Bixby Jazz Band often has the opportunity to perform in more diverse venues, such as the band’s traditional role of being the Saturday morning opening act at Bixby’s Annual BBQ and Blues Festival. Additionally, the band takes part in several competitions each year and consistently ranks as one of the top Jazz Bands in Oklahoma.
