Mr. Richard Wagner

Mr. Wagner holds degrees from Wichita State University, Northwestern University (IL), the University of Tulsa, and has done doctoral work at the University of Colorado.  In addition to directing the Bixby Instrumental Music program,  he is the Co-Conductor of the Tulsa Youth Symphony Orchestra and is in his fourth year as the Conductor of the University of Tulsa Symphony Orchestra.  He has also served on the faculties of Oklahoma State University and the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain.  In addition to his conducting and teaching, he has been active for many years as a hornist in such groups as the Tulsa Philharmonic, Tulsa Opera Orchestra, Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Wichita Symphony, the Denver Brass and the Aries Brass Quintet. He is married to oboist and teacher Lisa Iottini-Wagner and they have a wonderful 13 year-old daughter, Nicole.

Mr. Adam VanCuren

Mr. VanCuren is a native Tulsan and a 1997 graduate of Owasso High School.  Although he is partial to the crimson and cream, Mr. VanCuren is a “person divided,” receiving a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Oklahoma and a Master of Music from Oklahoma State University.  Before coming to Bixby, Mr. VanCuren held positions in Jenks and Ponca City.  When he has spare time, Mr. VanCuren enjoys water and snow skiing, traveling, and fellowship with his friends at Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church.  He is very happy to be back in the Tulsa area as a Bixby Spartan!

Mr. Matt Hartung

Mr. Hartung is not a native of Tulsa.  He is originally from Houston, Texas but is a 2000 graduate of Union High School.  Unlike Mr. Vancuren, Mr. Hartung is not a "person divided," receiving a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Oklahoma State (GO POKES!!).  Mr. Hartung also completed his student teaching in the fall of 2004 right here in Bixby (beat that Mr. Vancuren!).  In his pre-Bixby life, Mr. Hartung was the band director at Pawhuska and Hominy.  He had no clue where these places were until he worked there.  Mr. Hartung enjoys reading, playing with his dog Fez, and playing as much golf as possible.  Mr. Hartung is thrilled to be back in Bixby and looks forward to his future with this wonderful band program.

Ms. Jennifer Self

Jennifer Self was born and raised in Tulsa and is a 1996 graduate of East Central High School.  Mrs. Self was not concerned with trivial OSU/OU rivalries, so she received her Bachelor in Music Education from East Central University in Ada (Go Tigers!!)  and her Masters in School Administration from Northeastern State University in Broken Arrow (Go Riverhawks!!).   She has taught at Eufaula, Stidham and Mounds Public Schools before coming to Bixby in 2008.  She is a member of MENC, OMEA, OBA, Winterguard & Percussion of Oklahoma, and College Drum Majors of America.  Mrs. Self plays the oboe, flute and trombone among other instruments.  In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her husband Ken and their two children, Ashton and Cole, traveling, reading, drill writing and photography. She looks forward to many great years at Bixby.
