Marching Band
Built on principles of hard work, respect and cooperation, the Bixby High School
Marching Band has become one of the top bands in Oklahoma Class 5A, and in fact one of the top bands in the entire state, regardless of school size. With over 120 members, the Pride of Bixby offers students in grades 9-12 an opportunity for life-changing educational and social experiences. Through the development of character traits of dedication, discipline and teamwork, each member of our band learns what is required to be successful both on and off the performance field. Participation in the Pride of Bixby instills confidence, quality of character and a strong work ethic that goes beyond the practice and performance field, and makes our members some of our community’s top students and citizens.
The amount of time spent by our staff and students to achieve their goals is enormous. Preparation for each fall’s marching season begins early in the year with the selection of a show theme and music, and the creation of marching patterns and color guard drills that will create an unforgettable, crowd-pleasing show. The band is led by three Drum Majors who are selected by the band directors through an audition process each spring on the basis of their musical and leadership abilities. The drum majors are assisted by Brass, Woodwind, Percussion and Color Guard Captains, and by Lieutenants for each of the band sections - Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, and Percussion Ensemble.
Band Camp begins in July with 8-hour practices, held 5 days a week on an asphalt practice field in heat that often reaches 100°. Once school begins, band members practice together for at least two-hours each day, beginning at 7:00AM, with additional 2-3 hour evening practices during the week. The Band attends all home and most away football games and participates in 4-5 marching band competitions, usually on Saturdays. The Pride of Bixby also participates in the Homecoming Parade and the Bixby and Tulsa Christmas Parades. We also take a major trip on a bi-annual basis. Past destinations have included Disney World and the Citrus Bowl Parade in Orlando, the Peach Bowl in Atlanta and the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. On top of all this are the countless hours donated by students and parents in the creation of show props and color guard flags and costumes, and in fund-raising activities like car washes, garage sales and our fireworks stand.
To say it’s a lot of hard work would be an understatement! But our band members understand what is required to be a top-flight program and the results are evident in our trophy case, in the proud smiles of our students, parents and supporters, and in the many outstanding personal achievements of our members and alumni!
